July 22, 2024
What is the Program?

The Local Energy Efficiency Partnerships (LEEP) Program is an initiative under Canada’s Green Buildings Strategy designed to accelerate the adoption of energy-efficient building technologies and practices at the local level. Managed by Natural Resources Canada, LEEP focuses on helping builders, renovators, and other stakeholders in the construction industry implement innovative, energy-efficient solutions in residential buildings. The program aims to reduce energy consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and improve the overall sustainability of new and existing homes.

How Does it Work?

LEEP operates through a series of structured activities and resources aimed at facilitating the adoption of energy-efficient technologies:

  • Workshops and Training: LEEP organizes regional workshops and training sessions where builders and renovators can learn about the latest energy-efficient technologies and practices. These sessions provide hands-on experience and expert insights into implementing these innovations.
  • Demonstration Projects: The program supports projects focused on energy-efficient technologies, including building envelope improvements, HVAC systems, and renewable energy systems, showcasing practical applications of new technologies in real-world settings. These projects serve as examples and learning opportunities for other builders and renovators.
  • Technical Support and Resources: LEEP offers technical support and access to a wide range of resources, including guides, case studies, and best practice manuals. This helps builders navigate the complexities of adopting new technologies and ensures successful implementation.
  • Collaborative Networks: The program fosters collaboration among builders, suppliers, and other stakeholders, creating networks that facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experiences. This collaborative approach helps to build confidence in new technologies and accelerates their adoption.
How Can People Access the Program?

Builders and renovators can access the LEEP Program through the following steps:

  1. Regional Initiatives: Participate in regional initiatives organized by Natural Resources Canada. Information about upcoming workshops, training sessions, and demonstration projects is available on the program’s website and through industry associations.
  2. Workshop Registration: Register for workshops and training sessions to gain hands-on experience with energy-efficient technologies. These sessions are designed to be interactive and provide practical knowledge.
  3. Technical Resources: Access technical resources and support through the LEEP website. These resources include detailed guides, case studies, and best practices that help builders implement energy-efficient solutions.
  4. Networking Opportunities: Engage with collaborative networks facilitated by LEEP. These networks offer opportunities to connect with other builders, suppliers, and industry experts, fostering the exchange of ideas and experiences.
What is the Government Aiming to Achieve?

The primary objectives of the LEEP Program are:

  • Enhance Energy-Efficient Building Practices: Encourage the widespread adoption of energy-efficient building technologies and practices among builders and renovators.
  • Reduce Energy Consumption: Lower the overall energy consumption of residential buildings, contributing to national energy efficiency goals.
  • Promote Sustainability: Support the construction of sustainable homes that reduce environmental impact and improve the quality of life for residents.
  • Foster Innovation: Drive innovation in the construction industry by helping builders and renovators adopt the latest energy-efficient technologies.
How is Success Measured?

The success of the LEEP Program is measured through several key indicators:

  • Innovation Adoption Rate: The number of builders and renovators adopting new energy-efficient technologies and practices as a result of the program’s activities.
  • Improvements in Building Performance: The enhancements in energy performance of buildings constructed or renovated using technologies and practices promoted by LEEP.
  • Overall Energy Savings: The total reduction in energy consumption achieved through the adoption of energy-efficient technologies and practices.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: The level of participation and engagement from builders, renovators, suppliers, and other stakeholders in program activities.
  • Environmental Impact: The reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental benefits resulting from improved energy efficiency in residential buildings.

By focusing on these metrics, the LEEP Program aims to significantly impact the construction industry, promoting the development of energy-efficient, sustainable homes across Canada.

On July 16, 2024, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, unveiled Canada’s first Green Buildings Strategy.
